Targeted exercises can measurably improve nerve function, blood flow, and symptom management in neuropathic hands. The
NIH recommends these evidence-based exercises:
Finger spreads: Spread fingers wide, hold 5 seconds, relax. Repeat 10 times β this stretches nerve pathways and improves blood flow ποΈ
Fist-and-release: Make a tight fist, hold 3 seconds, then extend fingers fully. Repeat 15 times to improve nerve signal transmission.
Wrist flexion/extension: Gently bend your wrist forward and backward, holding each position for 10 seconds. This mobilizes the median and ulnar nerves.
Prayer stretch: Press palms together in front of your chest, slowly lower hands while keeping palms together β stretches carpal tunnel space π§
Thumb circles: Circle each thumb 10 times in each direction to maintain dexterity.
Rubber band resistance: Place a rubber band around all five fingertips and spread against resistance β strengthens grip muscles.
Ball squeezes: Squeeze a soft stress ball for 5 seconds, release. Repeat 15-20 times for grip strength maintenance πͺ Perform these exercises 2-3 times daily, especially before and after activities that stress your hands. Combine with regular
full-body exercises for nerve health.
